The Backyard Fruit Tree

This workshop, to be presented by Charles Day, is for anyone who has or would like to have a few fruit trees in their yards. The program will cover all aspects of the Backyard Fruit Tree and will include pruning in the Glynwood orchard. Topics are:

Site

  • How to assess the site for fruit tree culture.
  • How to prepare the site before planting.

Trees

  • If pre-existing, whether to keep or replace.
  • If new, what to look for in varieties, rootstocks and quality from nursery.

Establishment

  • Planting
  • Watering
  • Fertilizing

Routine Tasks

  • Pruning, etc.

Problems

  • Pests and disease (brief intro into IPM)
  • Climatic
  • Nutritional

Appreciating the Benefits

  • When to harvest
  • How to best enjoy the fruit
