Keep Farming Specialized Services
In addition to Keep Farming’s core step-by-step method of empowering communities to save farming, we also offer direct services to communities, landowners, and farmers. These services are designed to directly foster or strengthen the community’s farming economy. They include:
Keep Farming Land-Use Planning Workshop: This half-day workshop targets communities considering whether to adopt land-use ordinances and regulations as part of their strategy for saving farming. The workshop presents tools and techniques for creating land-use policies that are supportive of farmers and farmland conservation.
Keep Farming Landowners Workshop: This workshop targets owners of unfarmed farmland who are considering returning it to production by entering into lease agreements with farmers. The workshop connects landowners with information, models, resources, and services in order to equip them to forge successful agreements with farmers. It also presents criteria that landowners should weigh in seeking the right farmer to work their land. In particular, the workshop provides landowners an understanding of the farmers’ needs and perspectives in entering into a leasing contract.
Farm Potential Consultation: For non-farming landowners who have decided to return their land to production, Glynwood’s Director of Farm Operations will consult by telephone and/or walk the land to provide an initial assessment of its potential for farming and the type of production most likely to succeed on the land.
Farm Evaluation Report: For non-farming landowners who have engaged our initial assessment of their land and wish to take the next step, we will generate a Farm Evaluation Report. The report will:
- Evaluate the landowner’s property and recommend types and methods of production— e.g. livestock, vegetable, orchard.
- Analyze a property’s assets and needs for a farming operation – including water/irrigation, fencing, soil, topography, buildings and facilities.
- Estimate the cost of set-up for farming operations.
- Estimate costs of infrastructure and labor needs.
Farm Operations Consultancy: For non-farming landowners who are ready to put their land in production, we will provide start-up and operations consulting. For an annual retainer, these services will include:
- Guidance in identifying and working with suppliers of services, equipment, and farm products.
- Assistance in screening and selecting farmer candidates.
- Mentoring the farmer and landowner.
Delivering these services will entail regular visits to the property and meetings with the farmer and landowner.
