Backyard Fruit Tree Workshop March 31

This workshop, to be presented by Charles Day, is for anyone who has or would like to have a few fruit trees in their yards. The program will cover all aspects of the Backyard Fruit Tree and will include pruning in the Glynwood orchard.

  Topics are   

Site:

  • How to assess the site for fruit tree culture.
  • How to prepare the site before planting.

 Trees: 

  • If pre-existing, whether to keep or replace.
  • If new, what to look for in varieties, rootstocks and quality from nursery.

 Establishment: 

  • Planting
  • Watering
  • Fertilizing

 Routine Tasks:

  • Pruning, etc.

 Problems:

  • Pests and disease (brief intro into IPM)
  • Climatic
  • Nutritional

Appreciating the Benefits:

  • When to harvest
  • How to best enjoy the fruit

   Fee:  $65.00 (includes lunch).

Charles Day has 25 years of fruit growing experience in The UK and US. He is currently the Gardener Interpreter at Wave Hill in the Bronx, NY. He has also worked IN the Fruit Department of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden at Wisley, and has been a lecturer at the New York Botanical Garden. As a commercial manager he ran large orchards of apples, pears and plums.  He experimented with pruning techniques while at East Malling Research Station and cared for the UK’s National Fruit Collections at Brogdale in Kent.
