Institute Projects

The Glynwood Institute supports various projects that help shift the U.S. food supply to a regional sustainable food system, including an Innovation Program and Special Projects Division, along with a fund to help support these initiatives. The Institute also hosts workshops and special events and looks at creative ways people and groups are connecting to their food, both on a community level and from the perspective of the art world.

Innovation Program

The Innovation Program provides a grant and/or support to people, programs or groups working to further the Institute’s mission. The Program also helps develop tools and resources with a marketing and communications focus that enhance these projects.

The first Innovator projects currently underway are:

  1. The Glynwood Institute for Sustainable Food and FarmingDiane Hatz
Diane’s first project with the Institute is to develop, launch and direct the Institute. She is tasked with defining the structure, directing the programs and developing strategies that raise awareness about both the Institute and food and farming issues.
  2. Diet for a Hot PlanetAnna Lappe
In her latest book, Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It (Bloomsbury, March 2010), Anna deftly explains the links between today’s global food system and climate change, and offers readers ideas and inspiration for making sustainable food choices that can provide a catalyst for transforming the environment. Booklist calls it “impeccable, informative and inspiring.”

Currently, The Glynwood Institute is not accepting any queries or applications for additional Innovators, though eventually the Institute will expand to include 8-10 individuals. More information will be posted here as the program expands.

Special Projects

The Glynwood Institute develops its own projects to raise awareness and educate individuals or groups about sustainable food issues and to help groups interested in sustainable food and farming collaborate and network more effectively. The Institute also hosts workshops and special events.

The first Special Project of the Institute is the New Media Center for Sustainable Food, which is currently in development.

The first special event of the Institute will be TEDxManhattan on sustainable food. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is call TEDxManhattan, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxManhattan event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion around sustainable food issues and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. The event will take place in New York City in late 2010 or early 2011 and will be simulcast on the web. More information to come shortly.

Innovation Fund

As the Institute develops, support will be given to individuals and groups working to help the Institute achieve its goals. We will update this section when the fund launches.
